The National Art Museum of Catalonia, also known by its acronym MNAC, is located in the city of Barcelona. Noted for its Romanesque art collection, considered one of the most comprehensive in the world. Its director Josep Serra i Villalba.

The current museum was established in 1990 with the union of the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, established in 1945, and the Museum of Catalan Art, opened in 1934. The parts from these museums were added a new section of coins, engravings and other funds of the General Library of Art History. Later, in 1996, added a new department dedicated to photography. Background In 2006 the museum had almost 250,000 works in the collections. In addition to temporary exhibitions and touring, the museum also performs other functions such as the study, conservation and restoration of works of art.

The MNAC is a consortium of the Generalitat of Catalonia, the Barcelona City Council and, since early 2005, the General State Administration. On the board of the museum are represented, as well as government, individuals and private entities that collaborate with the museum.

The headquarters is located in the National Palace building on the Montjuïc mountain, opened in 1929 for the International Exhibition held in Barcelona. In addition, three other institutions are part of the museum: Victor Balaguer Museum Library and Geltrú Villanueva, the Garrotxa County Museum in Olot, and the Museu Cau Ferrat in Sitges.
