Barcelona is a city where the party never ends. Today, from the Boutique Hotel Murmuri, in the heart of Rambla Catalunya, we are talking about one of the most important festivities in Barcelona, Las Festas de la Mercè.
We celebrate them in honor of the patron The Virgin of Grace (Virgen de la Merced). There are all types of activities, from Catalan traditions like castellers or sardanas, to the most spectacular ones like Piromusical.
Nowadays, the city of Barcelona fills with live music, light shows and firecrackers, and of course, traditions. But is not only centered in Barcelona, since 2007, the city invites another city from all over the World. This year Lisbon will be represented by many artists in the different festivals.
Down below, we wrote the most interesting activities between the days 21 and 24 of September:
The festivities start with el Pregó on the 21st at 6:30 pm. Every year, a famous or known person in Barcelona makes a speech at Plaça Sant Jaume and with that, the party is started. Leticia Dolera, a Catalan actress and activist, is the one who starts La Mercè this year.
How to get there from Murmuri? First of all, the best way to enjoy La Mercè is go by foot everywhere, but we tell you the best public transport options. To get to Plaça Sant Jaume with the L3 metro to Liceu.
Barcelona transforms in a fairy tale with the parades full of dragons, giants and more fantastic creatures. It’s a nice way to know the Catalan traditions and history, also, kids love it!
The inaugural parade full of music will be on 21st at 6:45 pm. It starts at Plaça Sant Miquel. And one of the most spectacular is Bestias de Fuego (Fire Beasts) on 21st at 10 pm and it’s at La Rambla, Plaça Sant Jaume and Carrer Ferran. In this parade, dragons and demons dance with fire and flares to the music rhythm.
How to get there from Murmuri? Take the L3 metro at Diagonal to Plaça Catalunya.
Barcelona can’t make a holiday without fire, so you can’t miss the correfocs, where people play with fire, crackers and flares in a light and sound show. It’s celebrated at Via Laietana on Saturday 22nd.
Because its dangerousness, they have two parades, at 6:30 pm for the little ones and at 8:25 pm for adults, because you are never too old to enjoy the correfocs!
Caution! If you decide to participate, you must wear clothes that protect your skin, glasses and something to cover up your mouth and nose, because you are surrounded by fire and sparks!
Other thing to do is enjoy the music at the different festivals that happen in Barcelona.
BAM (Barcelona Acció Musical) proposes different spaces for their concerts like Plaça de Joan Coromines, Plaça dels Àngels, Rambla del Raval, La Antigua Fábrica Estrella Damm and Sala Apolo.
How to get there from Murmuri? The great location of the Hotel Murmuri makes super easy to get anywhere in the city of Barcelona. So the L3 metro will take you to Plaça de Joan Coromines and Plaça dels Àngels (Catalunya), Rambla del Raval (Liceu) and Sala Apolo (Paral.lel). And L5 metro to get to La Antigua Fábrica Estrella Damm (SantPau/Dos de Maig).
Another music festival is Mercè Música. There are multicultural concerts because is not only catalan groups and musicians, but also international music, mostly Lisboan artists. The places for the concerts are Platja del Bogatell, Avenida de la Catedral, Parc Central de Nous Barris and Moll de la Fusta.
How to get there from Murmuri? With the L3 metro and L5 metro from Diagonal, you can get to Avenida de la Catedral (Catalunya), Parc Central de Nous Barris (L3 Canyelles and L5 Vilapicina) and to Moll de la Fusta (L3 Drassanes). And to get to Platja del Bogatell with the bus 6 at Diagonal.
If you like the Catalan traditions, you must go to the MAC Festival (Mercè Arts de Carrer) during the four days of the festivities. It is located at Parc de la Ciutadella.
Also, at Plaça de Sant Jaume you can enjoy the human towers known as castellers and at Avenida de la Catedral, groups will be dancing the regional dance, la sardana.
How to get there from Murmuri? To get to Parc de la Ciutadella, the fastest way is by the 39 bus, but also, you can go walking, it’s 30 minutes but you will enjoy La Mercè anyway. And to get to Avenida de la Catedral and Plaça Sant Jaume you can take L3 metro and L5 metro at Diagonal.
One of the most modern and spectacular activities is the projection of scenes at the City Hall Façade at Plaça Sant Jaume where make an audiovisual show with lights and sound.
The schedules are: Friday 21st at 9:15 pm, Saturday 22nd at 8:30 pm, Sunday 23rd at 10:30 pm and Monday 24th at 8:45 pm. Every day every 15 minutes till 11:45 pm (unless Monday till 10 pm).
On the other hand, you can go to la Platja de la Barceloneta where is the Festival Internacional Pirotécnico with “La Fiesta de la Luz y el Fuego” (The Light and Fire Party). It’s on 21st and 22nd of September, both at 10 pm.
How to get there from Murmuri? To Platja de la Barceloneta you can take the buses 39, 45 and V15.
La Mercè can’t end without the spectacular show of the Piromusical. At Avenida Reina María Cristina and Plaça Espanya you can enjoy the fireworks and the sound and music show of La Fuente Mágica de Montjuïc (Magic Fountain) where kids and adults have fun. It’s the last day of the festivities, the 24th of September at 10 pm.
